Western Europe Digital English Market To Hit $428.6 Million By 2018

The analysis includes data for Self-paced eLearning (courseware), Collaboration-based Learning (live online classes and live online tutoring), Digital Reference-ware (eTextbooks, video, audio), Mobile Learning apps and edugames, and Mobile Learning value added services (VAS).

“The strong demand for digital English language learning products in Western Europe is due to several catalysts,” reports Chief Research Officer, Sam S. Adkins. “Large-scale digitization initiatives in the schools, language-related educational policies, government spending on adult ESL programs, consumer demand for Mobile Learning products, corporate demand for so-called vocational English, and the proliferation of Mobile Learning VAS are all driving the revenues higher.”

The mobile network operators (MNOs) are now major distributors of digital English language learning products. They sell Mobile Learning VAS products to both consumers and organizational buyers. The product type is relatively new to the region. The first Mobile Learning VAS in Western Europe was launched in Italy in February 2011. As of May 2014, there were 11 Mobile Learning VAS products across the region and all of them included English language learning content.

“Perhaps the most important long-term catalyst for digital English language learning in the region is the consumer demand for mobile educational apps,” adds Adkins. “In 20 of the 24 countries analyzed in this report, mobile English language learning apps and edugames are in high demand. Mobile Learning apps and edugames have the highest growth rate of all five products types in the region at 13.5% and revenues will nearly double over the forecast period.”
